Basements serve different purposes for different households. Some use their basement as a laundry room. Others turn it into a man cave or hangout place. Meanwhile, some people store unused furniture and other items in their basement. Because of its multipurpose use, it’s very important to protect it from one of its most common enemies—water.
Basements usually don’t have windows. So when it’s exposed to water, it can’t rely on sunlight or wind to dry up. And when it’s damp for days or weeks, it can be a breeding ground for molds, mildew, and insects. So before things get worse, you should consider waterproofing your basement. To further guide you, here are some signs that can help you tell if your house needs basement waterproofing ASAP: Your House Is Located in a Flood-Prone Area Basements suffer the most when there is a flood. That’s why if you live in an area that is prone to flood or strong typhoons, you shouldn’t second-guess about waterproofing your basement. Your Pipes Are Located in Your Basement Even if flooding isn’t common in your area, your basement can still get damp due to leaks or burst pipes in your basement. Even rain or snow can cause moisture. And when there’s moisture, mold can sprout anytime. Mold infestation is never good. It poses a health hazard and can cause damage to your home. Waterproofing your basement is a good way to prevent mold infestation. Your Basement Smells Musty Basements are often the most neglected area of the house, and you probably just go there at least once a week. But because of that, you may not be aware that water or moisture has already seeped into your basement. Basements that smell musty mean that they’ve been exposed to water for quite some time and mold growth has started. While the mold can be controlled, don’t hesitate to call an expert to have the mold removed, dry the area, and waterproof it to avoid it from happening again. Turn to A+ Environmental, Inc. The basement operates like a boat in a pond when groundwater levels outside the basement increase above the floor level. Water will leak in through any open cracks or holes if a boat is sitting on water. A basement works in the same way. Water can even be pushed through hairline fissures by hydrostatic pressure. This pressure forces water into the basement through cracks and joints, with the floor-wall joint being the most common entry point. Moisture is pushed through the porous concrete of your home by hydrostatic pressure on the walls. This is where the drier air in your basement absorbs it, making the air in your basement more humid. Are you aware of the advantages of basement waterproofing and why your neighbors do so?

I can see how waterproofing can help a property by preventing rainfall from creating foundation damage. I plan to buy a house where I can move most of my game and office setup into my new home. I'll be sure to invest in waterproofing in the future once I finalize my purchase!
